Lea House development opening event

On Tuesday 13 October, Sovereign South+West held an event to mark the opening of our Lea House development in Bradfield Southend, which features a post office and village shop as well as five apartments.

The development was opened by The Hon. Mrs Bayliss JP, The Lord Lieutenant for the Royal County of Berkshire, with government official Helen Marks, Regional and Rural Housing.

The development was a rebuild of a detached house that would have required a large amount of money to be brought up to decent home standard. One of the key differences with this development was building a shop and post office for the village community.

After the closure of their local post office, local campaigners were heavily involved in pressing for new retail facilities. In 2004 a not-for-profit community store was then set up with donations from local people and some grant funding, and run from a temporary portacabin in the village hall car park.

Sovereign South+West stepped in and after consultation with local residents, decided to include a permanent new post office and shop in the Lea House development, which is just next door to the village hall.
